Professor of Anthropology at Arizona State University. He is an archaeologist who has directed fieldwork projects at numerous sites in the provinces of the Aztec empire in central Mexico. His fieldwork focuses on the excavation of houses and the study of daily life. He has published ten books and numerous scholarly articles on the Aztecs; his books include the award-winning At Home with the Aztecs: An Archaeologist Uncovers their Daily Life (2016), Aztec City-State Capitals (2008), and Aztec Imperial Strategies (F. Berdan et al. 1996). He has also published widely on the organization of the Aztec empire, on archaeological methods for studying ancient empires and imperialism, and on com-parative and transdisciplinary approaches to premodern and contemporary urbanism.
